Google tags upgraded to full Tag Manager containers; GTM sends data directly to Google destinations

Google announced the unification of Google tag and Google Tag Manager: Google tags become fully capable GTM containers (interface tagging, debugging, version control), containers send data directly to Google destinations instead of loading a separate gtag.js, Google tag settings are centralized as Destinations, and new snippets use a 'gtm init' trigger. Adoption is opt-in via in-account optimization prompts; nothing changes automatically.

Previewed to partners around Google Marketing Live (May 20, 2026) and rolled out with UI changes from late June 2026. Users with edit/approve/publish permissions see optimization prompts and can preview before publishing; a visual data-flow view shows which Google destinations receive data. Google also cited partner integrations with Akamai, Cloudflare, Duda, Fastly and Webflow.
